Meg Cabot started her career writing romance novels under the pseudonym Patricia Cabot. She has also, written a few of her earlier books under her full name Meggin Cabot, and Jenny Carroll. Meg eventually went on to write notably series, such as The Princess Diaries and The Mediator series. She has written several other stand-alone novels, and a series for tweens, Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls.

Meg's first book was titled Where Roses Grow Wild as Patricia Cabot in 1998. It was followed by Portrait of My Heart, An Improper Proposal, A Little Scandal, Lady of Skye, Educating Caroline, and Kiss the Bride. A short story, "The Christmas Captive" was included in the anthology, A Season in the Highlands in 2000.

In October 2000, the first book of The Princess Diaries as well as the first book of The Mediator series were published. The Princess Diaries went on for fourteen more books with the last book published in 2009. Ransom My Heart written under Meg's character, Mia Thermopolis was also released in 2009.

The first four books of The Mediator series was published under Meg Cabot's pseudonym, Jenny Carroll, later they were republished under her real name. The series has a total of six books, but Meg has discussed a possible seventh novel. However according to her website Meg is "happy about the way the series ended," though she also says that she may write an epilogue. The series rights have been sold to Julia Pistor, and may be made into a film or TV show sometime in the future.

Another series, 1-800-Where-R-You?, Meg began writing in early 2001. Like The Mediator the first four books were written under her pseudonym, Jenny Carroll. Unfortunately the series was discontinued after four books because of poor sales. In 2004, the books were republished under Meg's real name. The last book was published in 2006 and titled, Missing You. A Canadian television show was also based on 1-800-Where-R-You?, and named Missing.

In between the above series Meg Cabot wrote All-American Girl in 2002 with a sequel, Ready or Not in 2005. Also she wrote her first adult novel, The Boy Next Door in 2002, which was followed by Boy Meets Girl in 2004 and Every Boy's Got One in 2005. She wrote several stand-alone novels during this time period, including She Went All the Way, Nicola and the Viscount, and Victoria and the Rogue

Meg Cabot began another adult series in 2005 titled, the Heather Wells series. The first book, Size 12 Is Not Fat was followed by Size 14 Is Not Fat Either in 2006, and Big Boned in 2007. Size 12 and Ready to Rock is the most recent book being released in 2012, and will soon be followed by Size 12 Is the New Black in 2013.

The first book of the Queen of Babble trilogy was first released in 2006. It was closely followed by Queen of Babble in the Big City in 2007, and Queen of Babble Gets Hitched in 2007. Currently there are no plans for another novel in the series.

Other teen novels released around 2004 to 2007, include Teen Idol, Avalon High, which was adapted into a Disney Channel Original film and a manga series, How to Be Popular, Pants on Fire, and Jinx.

Her first tween novel series, Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls were released throughout 2008 to 2010. According to Meg's website, Allie is currently on "summer vacation," hinting at a possible release of more. Meg Cabot also began the popular Airhead trilogy in 2008.

Her latest series are the Insatiable novels, and the Abandon trilogy. Additionally, Meg has also wrote several short stories for anthologies. Her most recent story, "Out of the Blue" was published in Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction.
